Initiated and sponsored by the Information Technology Services Department (ITSD) of the Government of the HKSAR, the IT Contest 2001 is organized with the aim to elevate the awareness and knowledge of information technology (IT) among all tertiary students and the general public in Hong Kong.
The Contest is co-organized by the ITSD, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hong Kong Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the hosting university for the debut of this large-scale event among the tertiary education institutions.
An Organizing Committee with representatives from all the organizers and the tertiary institutions were formed. Four Sub-committees were established under the Organizing Committee.

IT Contest 2001 comprises three component competitions:
- the IT Quiz (ITQ)
- the Collegiate Programming Competition (CPC)
- the Practical Project Competition (PPC)
IT Contest 2001 is open to all undergraduate and higher diploma students of the eight UGC- funded institutions and The Open University of Hong Kong.
The Collegiate Programming Competition is institution-based and team members must be from the same university.
For the IT Quiz and the Practical Project Competition, teams can be made up of students from different academic programs and institutions.
Students are encouraged to enter more than one competition.
